Emerging Adulthood is a new developmental phase between adolescence and adulthood (Arnett, 2000). This new phase occurs between the ages of 18-30 and includes such behaviors as additional risk taking, social identity development, relationship development and sexual exploration. This new developmental phase seems to only affect those above a certain socioeconomic status threshold. However, this age range is typical United States college student / college graduate age. What are the signs a student is in emerging adulthood and how should pedagogy be adjusted? How is this new developmental phase affecting new or pre-service music teachers? How does this affect music technology education? How can we bring our experience as educators to these students in order to foster growth, learning and excitement?
