Performing arts education training programs are increasingly integrating community partnerships, service learning and social entrepreneurship into undergraduate curricula. This trend points to a shift in the preparation of arts teachers to be educators not only in the music classroom, but also to master the ability to engage all populations of their community in arts learning. The line between the traditional performing arts classroom teacher and the teaching artist are becoming increasingly blurred. This session will explore how adjustments to arts education pedagogies can better prepare students for successful careers both in and out of the classroom as well as closely examine how “community music,” “community arts” and similar terms are impacting the professional expectations of today’s emerging educators.
